As the temperatures begin to rise and the daylight sticks around longer, we all have just one thought on our minds: Where are we going for summer vacation? This year has seemed to be a more stressful and busy one than normal, and we are ready to take some much-needed time to relax, recuperate, and recharge! What better place to do that than at the beach?
St. Simons Island has long been the paradise that allows vacationers to forget real life exists. Summer on the island offers fun, relaxation, and even a few exciting summer festivals. These summer festivals on St Simons Island prove that just when you think your St. Simons Island vacation can’t get any better, it will!
Summer Festivals on St Simons Island: Georgia Sea Island Festival, June 2nd
Celebrating all that is wonderful about African American traditions, the Georgia Sea Island Festival has been a local favorite for over 30 years. Sing along to the music that will be performed live by musicians old and young, peruse the stalls of handmade crafts—including beautiful baskets that have been a tradition on St. Simons since its beginning—and gorge yourself on traditional foods that will make your stomach smile! Held at Gascoigne Bluff from 11am until 6PM, festival admittance is free.
Fourth of July Celebrations
Summer vacations without fireworks, music, and homemade cotton candy may make you feel something is lacking, so if you’re planning your vacation to coincide with our nation’s birthday, you’ll find plenty to do on or near St. Simons Island! St. Simons Island Sunshine Festival has been a local tradition for over 60 years and takes place at Pier Village. Brunswick’s Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration is held at Mary Ross Waterfront Park (in Brunswick, of course!) and offers nostalgic games such as sack races, horse shoes, and even a hula hoop competition. The Jekyll Island Independence Day Celebration begins with a parade through the Historic District at 9AM, water slides and bounce houses at Jekyll Island Beach Village from noon until 6PM, and music and fireworks to end the day the right way!
