Sea Island is one of the smaller of the four barrier islands that comprise the Golden Isles off the coast of Georgia, but being small does not put a limit on your Sea Island activities. Forever immortalized in a Sydney Lanier poem, the beauty and tranquility of this Golden Isle jewel will have you never wanting to leave, not even to visit attractions on the other Golden Isles (but we still think you should, Georgia’s barrier islands each have a unique beauty that would be a shame to miss out on). Because the island is smaller than the others, it’s even easier to find Sea Island things to do close by.
With long stretches of pristine and unspoiled beauty spread out before you, the smell of the salty sweet ocean air, and the sound of the waves crashing against the sand, you’ll want to spend an entire day frolicking on the shores. Of course we start with this; of all the things to do on Sea Island, a day spent with your toes in the sand can’t be beat! Build sand castles with your kids, boogie board across the waters, or simply soak up the rays as you read your favorite book. Beach days are the best!
Sea Island is home to the Sea Island Golf Club, with its three championship courses, and the PGA McGladrey Classic. Golfers the world over flock to the island for the chance to walk in the footsteps of their idols. The Retreat Course, with its marshland landscapes, was designed by Davis Love III, and is a particular favorite of all golf fans. A chance to spend the day knocking the little white ball around these courses is a chance to spend the day in utopia.
Some of our favorite Sea Island things to do involve food, and more food, and the occasional adult beverage! Despite its diminutive size, the island has quite a few high end dining establishments serving amazing coastal cuisine. Southern Tide at the Sea Island Beach Club specializes in a mixture of fresh seafood and old Southern favorites; the 10 hour Fried Chicken tastes like a dish made by every Georgian grandma. The Georgian Room at the Cloister is a Forbes 5 star rated restaurant – the only one in all of Georgia – and features elegant and tasty meals, including a chef’s tasting menu that will astound you! If fine dining isn’t for you, never fear casual places like the Flip Flop Bistro and the Snack Shack can also be found scattered throughout the island!
One of the nice things about Sea Island is how near everything is, making it easy to find things to do on Sea Island. Drive over the causeway and you will find yourself on St. Simons Island, home to the St. Simons Island Lighthouse, Fort Frederica, and of course, more miles of pristine beaches! Visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, continue your golfing vacation at Jekyll Island Club or visit a beautiful white sand beach – Driftwood beach is one our faves! Little St. Simons Island and even historic Brunswick are all just a hop, skip and a jump away from your beautiful Sea Island vacation home.
