St. Simons Island, one of four barrier islands off the coast of Georgia, offers the opportunity to get away from the stresses of real life. The days here are slower paced, the people are friendly, and the beaches are unspoiled and beautiful. Long summer days spent on these beaches will get you through the hard cold days of winter, bringing warmth and comfort those times you think you may never feel warm again. Feel the heat of the sun on your face, smell the scent of salt in the air that kisses your cheeks, and dig your toes deep into the sand that frames the shore’s edge on one of the beaches that make St. Simons Island the summer vacation destination you will never want to leave.
Massengale Park Beach
Massengale Park Beach is the most popular of beaches on St. Simons Island, featuring lifeguards that are on duty from June 1st through Labor Day Weekend, picnic areas, and a bathhouse. Activities in the area include beach volleyball, a children’s playground, and all manner of water activities.
Stroll along the water’s edge seeking out that perfect sea shell, or take a chance on catching your evening dinner from the deck of a boat you’ve rented. Spread a colorful towel under an equally colorful umbrella and spend the day reading your favorite book with the music of the waves crashing against the beach. Hike, bike, or jog along the many trails you will find traversing the area. It doesn’t matter what you do, all that matters is the peace, laughter, and fun that accompanies every activity attempted on Massengale Park Beach.
Coast Guard Station Beach
Named after the historic Coast Guard station that still guards the entrance to this stunning beach, and also known as First Beach due to the access point name, this stretch of beach is among the largest on the island. A concession stand is open during the summer, allowing you to snack while leaving your cooler space free for more soft drinks and adult beverages (No glass is allowed, so cans only, please!). Daring souls can spend their day kiteboarding as the more timid members of their party frolic in the warm waters of the coast. Georgia sunsets are breathtaking and are even more so when viewed from the beach, so we recommend staying till nightfall; you won’t want to miss the show!
This narrow length of beach is more suited to bird watching and fishing than it is to swimming or other beach activities, but this quietly charming beach is one of our favorites. Pull up a lawn chair and spend the afternoon “drowning worms,” or bring your binoculars and checklist and spend the day viewing the amazing variety of birds our coastal island harbors. Parking is limited, so you might want to bike in or arrive early.
There are 41 access points to the beaches of St. Simons Island, and we know them all. Book your luxury SSI Rentals vacation home or condo today and start planning your fun filled beach vacation. Life is better on the beach!
