Who doesn’t like a nice fright around Halloween? I would wager there are quite a few people who would like to avoid it, but for those out there who enjoy exploring haunted landmarks, St. Simons Island, part of Georgia’s Golden Isles, is the perfect place for you come Halloween time! The island is home to some of the most amazing history, and as we know, the best history leads to the best haunted attractions. The following are some of the most interesting haunted St. Simons Island tourist attractions. They are sure to give you a good scare!
Pick a Beach
The Island is home to a ghost that can be seen around the forests and beaches of the entire island. Because of her knack for moving around, they call her “Mary the Wanderer.” Mary took her own life after the love of her life drowned as a result of his boat capsizing just off of the shore. This happened ages ago, but you can still find Mary with a lantern in her hand, searching for her love throughout the wilds of St. Simons Island.
This creek now falls on private property, unfortunately, but you can catch a glimpse of it from Sea Island Road. Take a look to the north while you are traveling east, just before passing over Dunbar Creek. This is where slaves were brought into port on this island. Well, one day, a noble tribe from Nigeria called the Igbos landed on St. Simons Island’s shores. Instead of being cast into slavery, their leader led them all into the waters of this creek in order to commit suicide.
Christ Church Cemetery
This cemetery is the resting place of a young woman who was terribly frightened of the dark. The story goes that following her death, her husband would bring a candle to her grave every single night. It has been many years since her husband has passed, but it is said that you can still see that spooky light every night. While you should not enter the cemetery, you can often catch a glimpse of the eerie, flickering light from beyond the fence. You will want to put on a light-hearted comedy when you return home from this journey.
There are countless more haunted St. Simons Island tourist attracitons on this historic island. If you want to go all out this Halloween, you should take part in the St. Simons Ghost Tours, The Ghost Walk of St. Simons Island, or the Last Ride Ghost Tours.
