The Top Waterways in St. Simons Island

While St. Simons Island is mostly known for its beautiful ocean waters and miles of pristine and unspoiled beaches, the ocean isn’t the only water game in town! Our lakes are historic and our rivers are filled with fish of all types. And while you only get a man-made waterfall during your stay on the island, what’s more fun than splashing around in a cool waterfall on a hot summer’s day in Georgia? If you have time to travel, however, be sure and head north for an opportunity to see some of the most stunning natural waterfalls in all of Georgia; the Anna Ruby Falls are worth the journey! On St. Simons Island itself, the following spots are our favorite places to play in the water.

The Marshes of Glynn

While not exactly a lake, the marshes on St. Simons Island are as close to a lake as you will get (other than some golf course ponds). However, their beauty and majesty will take your breath away. The romantic beauty of the Marshes of Glynn, in particular, have inspired poems to be written about them. You can also take part in a kayak tour that soothes the soul as it preserves the natural beauty of these bodies of water.

The Mackay River

Connecting St. Simons Island with nearby Brunswick, the Mackay River, a part of the Intracoastal Waterway, is a beautiful ribbon of water that is a favorite of kayakers, fishermen, and water lovers of all ages. Beautiful any time of day, the river becomes even more stunning with the setting sun. The Mackay River Fishing Pier is a great place to while away a few hours with a cold beer and a fishing pole.

Hampton River

This 12-plus mile long river on St. Simons Island actually serves as gateway to Little St. Simons Island, a private barrier island as well as a fishing mecca. Grab your poles and head to the Hampton River Marina, where you can charter a fishing tour; they will provide poles if you don’t have one of your own!

Neptune Park

The flat landscape of St. Simons Island doesn’t allow for a true waterfall, but you won’t miss it when you’re having fun at Neptune Park. This water park is designed for kids of all ages, and the clear blue waters will not have any hidden sea creatures lurking around to frighten you!
