St. Simons Island is one of 4 islands known as the Golden Isles located off the coastal shores of Georgia and historic Brunswick; although not technically an island is a mainland city close enough to the Golden Isles to be considered an integral part of this Coastal Utopia. Charming and unique, this stunning town on the coast with its magnolia tree lined streets and squares may just be the next place you call home…but until you make that life changing decision, we think it’s a town you want to vacation at over and over through the years!
Historic Downtown Brunswick
After being sadly neglected over the years this area of town is suddenly becoming THE place to visit. Victorian buildings are being restored, including The Ritz Theater, originally built in 1898 and called the Grand Opera House, this historic building is the center of a new and burgeoning arts district. Today it is open year round and has live theater shows, films, and exhibits of all kinds. At the opposite end of Newcastle Street, the Old City Hall built in 1886 is a multi-use event hall/court house…if you’re planning on getting married during your vacation, this Richardsonian Romanesque style building is an elegant and glamorous option for the wedding venue. In between the two locales you will find a glorious mixture of shops, galleries and theaters…all housed in Victorian style buildings that just exude history and charm. And when you’re tired of shopping and art galleries, stop in one of our delicious restaurants and sample the taste of Georgia…fresh Wild Georgia Shrimp…it’s delicious…and addictive!
If beautiful weather, friendly people and delicious seafood isn’t enough to tempt you into visiting Brunswick, maybe one of our festivals will help! Plan your St. Simons Island Vacation for October and check out the Brunswick Rockin’ Stewbilee and its might tasty stew competition! With a 5K, a pet parade, a fun zone for kids, an antique car show and arts and crafts this Stewbilee has the feel of a Norman Rockwell portrait come to life. On Mother’s Day in Brunswick, it’s time to celebrate the Blessing of the Fleet with a parade through Hanover Square and the blessing of the shrimp boats that are starting their shrimping season. This Portuguese tradition is bright and colorful and could be considered the heart of coastal Georgia. During Christmas, although it’s not technically a festival, the Christmas after Hours tour of the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation site Historic Site is the chance to experience Christmas as it might have been in the 1850s. Tour guides dressed in period costume will lead you through the candle lit plantation decorated in its finest festive accessories as you drink wassail and eat cookies and feel the Christmas spirit fill you with warmth and happiness.
